Parents certainly play a significant role in making decisions for their children. Reports suggest that many engineering students are being advised or forced to join engineering from their parents and family members. And at times it could be for the reason that of some economical reasons.
The selection of an engineering college or appropriate degree is highly affected by social pressure. A person is highly influenced by his parents’ or someone else’s thinking that people in IT industry have bright future and make huge money. It’s just an affair of getting our son/daughter into these industries and he/she is set for lifetime and will soon extract all the capital that is being invested. The present statistics carry this piece of information.
Most parents, on the other hand, do not understand that the concept that a graduating from a tier-3 college and graduating from a tier-1 college have their different values. They believe that an engineer is an engineer, regardless of where he/she graduates from.
And another shocking factor is the source of information, because it’s quite unreasonable at most of the times. Instead of making a proper research, they prefer asking people around them and make their decision accordingly. The information provided by these people is hardly related to the actual quality parameters.
There is a rising delusion that if a student has good interest in social networking or computer gaming, he is a good candidate of a software engineering. And more surprisingly, they think their kid can be an electronic engineer because last time he repaired your radio. And even worst, he should be an automobile engineer because he loves driving sports car, in computer games!
Though, the situation is changing now, as some engineering colleges have started offering counseling for the engineering aspirants. Though, this is quite necessary for the parents to attend these sessions to guide their pupils in a better way.
